Do I need therapy for stress?

Stress is a normal part of life, but too much of anything can be a bad thing.

Here’s why.

Imagine for a moment that you keep all of your stress, responsibilities, and worries a bucket.  Sometimes, the bucket might feel manageable, light and easy to carry. Sometimes, it might be too heavy even to pick up.  And sometimes, it might even overflow, spill, and make a mess.  When people experience too much stress and worry, their stress bucket just can’t hold the many responsibilities of life.

Here are a few of the top indicators that your stress bucket is overflowing:

  • Feeling overwhelmed and exhausted

  • Frequent arguments and conflict with others

  • Being irritable, grumpy, or on-edge

  • Difficulty with sleep (too much, not enough, not feeling rested)

  • Unintentional changes in body weight

  • Muscle tension, aches, and pains

  • Wanting just to give up

Being overwhelmed with stress happens to everyone from time to time.  However, if things don’t improve and the stress remains, health issues can arise – high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and more.

Fortunately, stress management therapy can help stressed out people recover, rest, and regain a sense of control. If you or a loved one are overwhelmed by stress, don’t wait.  Contact us today to get signed up for your first session.

How can therapy for stress help?

Therapy gives you a chance to set the stress bucket aside, feel supported, and learn to make things different.

Often, the stress is reduced simply by having someone truly listen and validate your emotional experience.  However, that only tends to help until the stress comes back. So, we try to teach you how to deal with stress outside the therapy office.

Specifically, therapy can help you learn to use three stress-management strategies:

People tend to take on too much, prioritize the needs of others, and attempt to control the uncontrollable.  People who provide care for others, such as parents raising children, caretakers, and healthcare providers are particularly at-risk of being overloaded with responsibility.  Therapy can help you learn to set healthy boundaries with life’s many demands so that you have more resources for your own health.

Similarly, we tend to focus too much on output, rather than input.  We focus on being productive, we work overtime, and chase our dreams; and sometimes, our human needs are set aside.  Therapy can teach you ways to recharge and find a healthy, functional, sustainable work-life balance.

And sometimes, stress makes us disconnected from others and ourselves.  The burden of stress, responsibility, and worry falls completely on you – and that can be quite lonely.  Therapy for stress can help as we work to reconnect you with yourself and build on real-world relationships.

All of these strategies can help reduce your stress.  However, MBSR takes things to the next level by adding in the fourth component of mindfulness.

Mindfulness is all about regaining a sense of self, achieving awareness, and finding psychological freedom.  MBSR also uses meditative practices and body relaxation techniques to help augment your ability to rest and recover.  Additionally, MBSR seeks to help you understand and achieve what truly matters most to you.

As you learn to set boundaries, recharge, reconnect, and use strategies from MBSR, your capacity to handle whatever life throws your way will increase.  If you are interested and ready to get started, let’s connect.
