Do I need therapy for sleep issues?

Good sleep is an absolutely essential part of a healthy lifestyle.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body doesn’t have time to recover and heal from day-to-day use, strain, and injury.  You feel sluggish, weak, and gross when you are sleep deprived because your body hasn’t had enough time to recharge.

This is also true of your brain – when your brain doesn’t have a chance to rest, you’ll experience psychological difficulties such as:

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Irritability

  • Mood swings

  • Stronger reactions to stress

  • Mental drowsiness and sluggishness

All of this can be caused by just one night of inadequate sleep!

When people suffer from sleep issues over long periods of time, known as chronic sleep deprivation, the consequences are much worse.  Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to decreased cognitive ability, depression and anxiety disorders, blood pressure and cardiovascular problems, and more.

Thankfully, psychotherapy can help people deal with their sleep problems quickly and effectively.  Here at Behavioral Medicine Partners, we know how stressful and debilitating insomnia can be – but it doesn’t have to stay that way.  If you’ve tried everything, and nothing seems to work, it might be time to give therapy a try.

How can therapy for insomnia help?

Therapy for insomnia targets the three main contributors to poor sleep: environmental, emotional, and behavioral.

Environmental.  Sometimes, something about the physical sleep space is keeping you from resting.  You can learn strategies for using your environment to train your brain to begin resting on time.  Psychologists can help you identify aspects of your sleep environment that prevent proper rest. Details such as the lighting, temperature, and sound can be adjusted to help you achieve the sleep you need.

Emotional.  Poor sleep can also be caused by emotional turmoil and stress.  An example of this would be if you are up late tossing and turning because you can’t stop thinking about school or work.  Or, sometimes traumatic life events cause nightmares and night terrors, and so therapy may be appropriate for helping you heal from the trauma.

Behavioral.  Often, poor sleep is the result of unhealthy routines and poor sleep hygiene.  Sleeping in on the weekend, skipping your workout, having caffeine in the afternoon, and watching Netflix in bed are all examples of poor sleep hygiene habits.  Therapists can help you learn to practice effective sleep hygiene, build healthy habits, and make deep sleep part of your daily routine.
