Therapy for Grief and Loss

Have you experienced a significant loss, such as the death of a loved one?  Are you overwhelmed with pain, sadness, or heartache? Does it feel hopeless, like nothing will ever be the same again?

You are not alone.

Loss is incredibly common.  Millions of Americans are affected by the death of a loved one or pet each year, and too many feel alone and must struggle with grief without support.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Behavioral Medicine Partners offers individual therapy for adults from all over the area because no one should have to grieve alone.  We know what it’s like to struggle with loss and deeply miss our departed loved ones.  And, we know what it’s like to move forward, continue on, and live the life they would want for us.

Do I need therapy for grief?

When we lose someone or something important, grief is the natural response.

Most grief happens after the loss a loved one.  Feelings of being hurt, sad, afraid, and lonely come up because we care so much about them.  Everyone experiences grief differently - some experience grief for a few days or weeks, some for a few months, and others will continue to grieve for years and years after the loss.  Some will feel “numb” immediately after a loss, only to have grief emerge later on.

In some cases, grief can happen with the loss of one’s identity – loss of a job, loss of good health, loss of being a parent, etc.  We grieve the life we could have had, the future we planned for ourselves, or the life we enjoyed.

No matter what brought about your grief, and no matter how long you’ve been struggling with the loss, therapy can help – especially if the grief has become unhealthy or dysfunctional.  Some common indicators of potentially unhealthy grief might include:

If you or a loved one are struggling with grief, or if the grief has become unhealthy, let us help.  Contact us today to get the support you need.

How can therapy for grief help?

Even when life feels like it has fallen apart, therapy for grief helps you pick up the pieces.

Therapy for grief (or grief therapy) is specifically designed to do three things:

Emotional support. therapy is your safe haven for emotional support.  Whether you are anticipating a loss, experiencing a new loss, or continuing to grieve losses from the past, we are here for you.  Therapy can help you carry difficult feelings of sadness, anger, and regret.

Personal safe haven.  Therapy provides a confidential, judgment-free space to work through the loss.  You can work through the grief at your own pace, without feeling like you are burdening others.  Therapy for grief offers an intentional space to share what’s on your mind, feel your feelings, and notice new things about yourself.

Progress on your journey.  Therapy offers a chance to learn strategies for coping and grieving well.  Grief often makes us forget to take care of ourselves, especially when we need to take care of others who are grieving.  Starting therapy is a great first step towards self-care, and your therapist can help you continue to build on that progress.

As you and your therapist work together, the grief will be easier to bear, and the pain will begin to heal.  You can even learn to reintegrate lost loved ones into your life, all with the support of a compassionate therapist.
